ALLA POVELIKHINA is an art historian specializing in Russian avant-garde art. After graduating from Leningrad University's Department of Art History, she went on to complete a postgraduate course in the problems of Western and Russian Constructivism at the Department of Architecture of the Leningrad Institute of Engineering and Construction. Povelikhina's research and published works focus on the architectural ideas of Kasimir Malevich, Alexander Nikolsky, on Russian painted shop signs and on the plastic problems expounded by the school of Mikhail Matiushin. Alla Povelikhina has been with the Museum of the History of Leningrad for many years and has put together numerous museum displays, including, among others, "Velimir Khlebnikov in St. Petersburg - Petrograd", and "M. Matiushin and His School". In the 1960s-1970s both Alla Povelikhina and Yevgeny Kovtun were part of the circle of artists and art historians close to Vladimir Sterligov, a follower of Kasimir Malevich. It is, in fact, to those years of cooperation with Sterligov that Povelikhina owes her theoretical background and understanding of the plastic basis of modern art.
YEVGENY KOVTUN is a graduate of the Department of Art History of Leningrad University, where he also completed a postgraduate course on Russian art. He presently works at the Russian Museum in Leningrad. Russian art of the early twentieth century and theoretical problems of Russian avant-garde art are long-standing interests of the author. Kovtun has written a number of books and about a hundred articles on avant-garde artists, such as Filonov, Malevich, Kulbin, Guro, Yermolayeva, and Sterligov, as well as on Russian Futurist book graphic art. Kovtun took part in the organization of the exhibitions "Russian Prints of the Late Nineteenth - Early Twentieth Century" (1968), "Petrograd ROSTA Windows" (1968), "Book Covers by Early-Twentieth-Century Russian Artists" (1968), "Moscow - Paris" (1979), "Mikhail Larionov" (1980), "Kasimir Malevich" (1980, Düsseldorf), and "Art and the Revolution" (1980, 1988, Japan).
